Good Sense will scout ahead for danger,
Insight will keep an eye out for you.
They'll keep you from making wrong turns,
or following the bad directions
Of those who are lost themselves
and can't tell a trail from a tumbleweed,
These losers who make a game of evil
and throw parties to celebrate perversity,
Traveling paths that go nowhere,
wandering in a maze of detours and dead ends.

Nourishment of Encouragement

God's laws are not burdensome. They can be reduced to two simple principles: love God and love others. These commandments are from the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 6:5, Leviticus 19:18). When you love God completely and care for others as you care for yourself, then you have fulfilled the intent of the Ten Commandments and the Old Testament laws. According to Jesus, these two commandments summarize all God's laws. Let them rule your thoughts, decisions and actions. When you are uncertain about what to do, ask yourself which course of action best demonstrates love for God and love for others.

Nourishment of Encouragement

Just as a dirty window conceals what's on the inside, so an unclean life keeps Jesus from being seen in us. We ought to ask ourselves, "Who do people see when they look at me?" If they see love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, then they're seeing Jesus through the Holy Spirit in us.

Galatians 2:20 — I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

We often wish we could escape troubles — the pain of grief, loss, sorrow and failure, or even the small daily frustrations that constantly wear us down. God promises to be "close to the brokenhearted," to be our source of power, courage and wisdom, helping us through our problems. Sometimes he chooses to deliver us from those problems. When trouble strikes, don't get frustrated with God. Instead, admit that you need God's help and thank him for being by your side.

James 3: 9-11
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?

Nourishment of Encouragement

Whether a "longing fulfilled" is good or bad depends upon the nature of the desire. It is "sweet to the soul" to achieve worthwhile goals, but not all goals are worth pursuing. When you set your heart on something, you may lose the ability to assess it objectively. With your desire blinding your judgement, you may proceed with an unwise relationship, a wasteful purchase, or a poorly conceived plan. Faithfulness is a virtue, but stubbornness is not.

Running away is sometimes considered cowardly. But wise people realize that removing themselves physically from temptation often can be the most courageous action to take. Doing "all in the name of the Lord Jesus" means bringing honor to God in every aspect and activity of daily living. As a Christian, you represent Christ at all times — wherever you go and whatever you say. What impression do people have of Christ when they see or talk with you? What changes would you make in your life in order to honor God?

To "believe" is more than intellectual agreement that Jesus is God. It means to put our trust and confidence in him that he alone can save us. It is to put Christ in charge of our present plans and eternal destiny. Believing is both trusting his words as reliable and relying on him for the power to change. If you have never trusted Christ, let this promise of everlasting life be yours — and believe.

Nourishment of Encouragement

The heart cools gradually as a person gives higher priority to other relationships and activities than to the Lord. Our enemy Satan has subtly shaped how the word "idol" is perceived. He's limited the definition to false Gods. The truth is, anything that distracts from God qualifies as an idol. God desires an intimate relationship with every believer. So let me ask you a question: are you excited about Jesus? Our best and purest devotion will be to whatever or whomever we prioritize above all else. If that is not Jesus, repent and let him rekindle the flame of your first love.
